Tile calculator in m²: tiles, adhesive and grout

This tile calculator in square metres works out the materials for a tiling job from the area: the tiles to buy in boxes, and the kilograms and bags of tile adhesive and grout. Enter the area, the waste and the box size, and take the adhesive consumption and grout density from the data sheet of the product you use.

How does the tile and grout calculator work?

The calculator adds waste to the quantities you buy and rounds them up to whole boxes and bags. Grout consumption comes from the joint length per square metre times the joint width, depth and grout density.

What you calculate Formula
Tiles to buy area × (1 + waste), rounded up to whole boxes
Tile adhesive area × consumption (kg/m²) × (1 + waste)
Grout per m² (A + B) ÷ (A × B) × joint width × joint depth × density, in mm
Grout in total grout per m² × area × (1 + waste)

A and B are the tile’s sides in millimetres. With the joint also in millimetres, the result is kilograms per square metre.

What else do you need besides the calculator?

Work out floors and walls separately, because the tile, the consumption and the waste differ. Waterproofing, primer, corner tape and silicone are not in the calculator, so add them as lines of their own. The formulas and a worked bathroom are in the guide how much grout, adhesive and concrete do I need, and pricing the labour in tiling cost per m².

Whole quotes in minutes with The Platform

The Platform works out quantities, labour hours and materials for the tiling from a description, photos or a drawing, prices each line and exports the quote to Excel in minutes. The service is launching soon.

Questions and answers

How much grout do I need per square metre?
It depends on the tile size and the joint. With 300 × 300 mm tiles, a joint 3 mm wide and 8 mm deep and a grout density of 1.8 kg/l, you need about 0.29 kg per square metre.
How many tiles do I need?
Multiply the area by the waste factor and divide by the box size. 5 square metres with 10 percent waste is 5.5 square metres, so four boxes of 1.44 square metres.
Where do I find the consumption of tile adhesive and grout?
In the technical data sheet of the product you use. Adhesive consumption depends on the notch trowel size, and grout density on the product.
